Dear New Student;
Welcome to the exciting class of Public Speaking!
This is a fun class and I hope that you get as much out of
the class as I do and enjoy opening yourself up to be able to confidently speak
in public.
The class will teach you the right elements are you need to
include in any public speaking that you do. It has also helped me to understand
what to include and not include in my writing. English is my second language, I
still have some trouble with use of the correct words or phrases, this class
taught me what is proper and acceptable and how to be a better speaker.
Don’t get me wrong, the class is not easy. It requires a lot
of time for homework, but Ms. Lawton has made very helpful video’s and her
written direction is easy to follow. The
videos make the class easy to follow and are a big help in understanding what
she expects from us. I have watched some of them more than once, using them as
a refresher when doing homework or preparing my speeches.
The hardest part for me as a student is being a single Mom,
owning a home, and working full time. This leaves little time for me to do
homework so late nights and weekends were required to keep up. That was probably the worst part for me
because I like my sleep!
It was entertaining to listen to the other students give
their speeches and score them on well they presented. Although I was the oldest one in my class,
(sometimes I felt like the Mom) the other students made me feel very welcomed
and comfortable. We laughed easily with each other and it made the classroom
work fun. Knowing that everyone was
nervous helped put us all at case.
Speaking in front of people is always hard, you’re not sure
how the audience will view you, or what to do with your hands or papers and
notes. My favorite part of the class is looking back where I started and
realizing how much I learned. Even my English language has improved.
In closing, I hope you enjoy this class as much as I have and
that you become a much better and more confidant speaker.
Sincerely,
S.Y.H
